Semishigure

AKA Love and War of the Samurai or Bunshiro and Fuku. So far I have watched 2 parts of the 3 part miniseries on KIKU TV. The story is from a novel by Shuhei Fujisawa, who also wrote Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade, two of the better samurai movies I have seen lately.
Bunshiro and Fuku are neighbors as children and as they grow and flirt a bit, they fall in love. Being children in samurai families, duty always comes first and their destiny is not to be together. They are separated 5 years when Fuku becomes concubine to their Lord and bears his child. They are separated 20 years when the story actually starts.
Bunshiro is adopted by a very quiet but honorable samurai and tries to emulate him. There is intrigue in the clan and Bunshiro's father is forced to commit seppuku. Bunshiro and his mother are not killed but are forced to live in poverty. Bunshiro is given back his status by his father's enemy, but he accepts it to give his mother a better life.
The slime ball of course wants to use Bunshiro in his plans to keep the succession of the Lord's heir in his favor, and that does not bode well for Fuku.
The background samurai tale is that while in poverty, Bunshiro trains with masters to hone his skill as a swordsman. He meets Hyoma, his nemesis at a dojo and I can't wait until next week when a lot of action and the showdown is promised.

I finished the first season of Lost and darn if it didn't leave me hanging. I enjoyed the series, but one of the best parts of this show for me was the scenery. I spent a lot of time on that beach when my kids were little. We net the baby aholehole and manini like so many Hawaiian kids do, and slipped on the seaweed. I still have the shells and glass I collected. Good memories.

Lost and the Pirates

Whew it was another one today! My allergies are all aflare, leaving my head fuzzy. I missed another appointment, but I don't think this one really counts as I never recieved a confirmation. I let the battery of my phone die. I had plans to meet a friend for a movie and I was wondering why she didn't call. When I plugged in, there was a message. I managed to get in every wrong lane on the way down. She had already done her damage at Border's so luckily I only had time to buy one magazine.

Then it was off to lunch and Pirates of the Carribean, Dead Man's Chest. I never made it to Disneyland until I was about 22 and the Pirates ride was a memorable one. I have to thank my then boyfriend for putting up with me there. I had such a good time. But then, I digress. On to the movie! I wasn't sure what to expect other then the dead men morphing in to creatures of the sea, and there was al lot of that. It was a jolly fun movie and quite exciting!
I will rate it 3.5/5 acorns.

I also started watching Lost, Season 1. Although many of the banyan tree jungle scenes were filmed walking distance from my house, I never watched it. It appears they are in Season 3 so I have a bit of catching up to do. I also get to see the mountain scenes of the Koolaus every working day. I am on episdoe 7 of the first season and have been quite entertained. There is quite a league of nations on this show and this hunk of burning love!

It's the dimples.

I'm going to bite the bullet and take an antihistamine tonight before I scratch my eyes out! I suspect these allergies are my bad karma for not being neat.
The good news I had today is that my refrigertor has finally come in. Now to schedule a time to have it installed. Just call me Ramblin.

TV and the other War of the Worlds

SciFi channel had a series of catastrophe movies...Fire Ice etc. I watched Ice. The earth freezes over and the evil scientist uses a band of survivors to transport him to a ship which has room for only him. The ship is moving "vital" people to the equator to work on solutions. Althought ultimately foregetable and predictable, I enjoyed this TV movie. It had drama and action and some icey special effects. I will give it 2/5 acorns and no clives. Beware, this rating may be a sign of my current brain dysfunction.

I already know about the older War of the Worlds classic 1953, and of course the new War of the Worlds with all the bells and whistles modern CGI can muster, but I didn't know there was another, low budget version, starring C. Thomas Howell. The creatures in this one look like large spiders. This version moves at a slower pace. It had it's high moments, it's share of drama and creepiness, and a bright spot at the end.

At the end of both Ice and this movie I kept thinking, "What a mess!" "Now what?" But I guess this will be where society breaks down to "lower" level, the strong triumph over the weak, and perhaps zombies take over. Well, maybe not.

I will rate War, 2.5/5 acorns. It has a tiny clive rating, but then what can you expect from a bug movie.

Yesterday

While I struggle with depression and dissatisifaction with work, it is tough not to feel blessed to see the Koolau's on my way to work everyday and even out back of my office. And the today's title should remind me that all that "stuff" is so yesterday, and that's where it should stay.
